The Louvre
La Jeune Martyre, 1855 - I was most drawn to this painting because of its ephemeral qualities. I can find similar qualities in my own Photography work. I did a series of Veils, which were very ephemeral, while still having a dark undertone of the veil representing a mask. Overall, the painting has a very morbid subject, with the woman bound in rope and dead in the water, but because of her tranquil expression (she seems content, as if she was fine with dying), light brushstrokes and ethereal (otherworldly, even) light on her figure, it still has a very light feeling...while stained with underlying morbidity...
